Plans

There are plenty of requests at The Hurl for free plans that they can build a trebuchet from. Now, usually any available plans are not going to be exactly what you are looking for, whether not in scale, the wrong type, or something else. At the same time, someone else's designs can be used to get a feel for what needs to be done, and it is with this in mind that we will be releasing the full drawings for some trebuchets.

We will also release the plans for anything else we design to help with building a trebuchet. The only such plans we have right now is for the quick release trigger, which was designed to fix the original bad trigger on the Melon Felon. But anything else we come up with along the way will be found here soon after. We also now have Ripcord's Tennis Ball Trebuchet Plans available here.

Enjoy the plans, just remember that they are not to be used for profit in any way. And, as always, keep the disclaimer in mind when you use anything found here.

While we had the rough plans to Jeckyl and Hyde almost ready, the continuing emergence of design flaws with the machine mean that they are not going to be released. Not all of the problems stem from the King Arthur aspect, either, so use of the frame for even a standard trebuchet is not a good idea right now. The machine is just too unstable right now to be used by anyone else. That being said, we have had no stability issues with the Melon Felon, and attempts will be made to get those plans released at a future date.

Use "common sense" when operating trebuchets and catapults. Even little ones can be dangerous. Do not place anything you are not willing to lose in the plane of the arm rotation (this includes yourself, body parts, car windshields, cameras, etc). These catapults and trebuchets are capable of throwing just as far backwards as forwards, and the use of a backstop of some sort is recommended, though the use of one does not make the region behind it safe.

Also, just because the throw got away safely downrange does not mean the end of the danger. The arm is likely still swinging wildly along with the counterweight, and there is a sling whipping around. One thing many people fail to take into account is this sling; some people put a metal ring on the slip end of the sling and this ring can HURT when whipping around!

Have fun hurling, but please KEEP IT SAFE!!!
